Practical chess is more important than chess being played with the use of computers especially for a child to develop skills in the game, chess champion Vishwanathan Anand has said.
He said this at an online media interaction organised by NIIT here yesterday.
The grandmaster, speaking from Kolkata, noted that computers should be seen as an effective tool to understand the various nuances of the game from the comfort of a drawing room.
Anand also drove home the point that chess in India has a large following though better promotion to the game would do it a world of good. He said Chennai could be rightly viewed as the hub of Indian chess.
When quizzed by the scribes how he relaxes himself during international tournaments, he replied that taking long walks was a great stress-buster and added that during off- seasons he would work out in the gym to improve his general fitness to withstand the pressures of an approaching international tournament.
He also said a person wishing to become a professional in the game should constantly update himself on the latest techniques of the game.
The chess wizard also said the sport needs to be promoted among the rural areas by enabling them to access the latest technologies.
The occasion witnessed chess
enthusiasts from cities such as Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.
They played with Anand simultaneously in a technology called as 'Synchronised
Learning' developed by NIIT.
