'Good impact if India was under APEC fold'

NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 2:

Inclusion of India into Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) would have positive effect to both APEC as well as India, observed John McCarthy, Australian High Commissioner to India.

Speaking at a two-day seminar on 'The Asian Century: Driving Global Trends' organised by Australian High Commission in Chennai, he said that India's entry would have had a good impact in the global scenario. But things failed to materialise since there wasn't an accord among the members. It is no gainsaying that India's links with the rest of the region would have strengthened APEC if there had been a consensus to include India under its fold.

He said that Australia was the biggest supplier of resources that had paved for setting up industries in Japan, China and Korea and added India would become the fourth largest exporting market with an export of 93 per cent of resources from Australia.

Referring to Asia Pacific region's growth momentum, he said that day is not far off when India would prove to be an alternative to China.
