Plea for contempt proceedings against DMK

AIADMK to knock at SC door again

NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 2:

Buyoed by the strong remarks of the Supreme Court against the ruling DMK government on the bandh issue, the main opposition AIADMK is straining every nerve to submit credible evidence to the apex court that its orders were indeed flouted.

According to informed sources, the AIADMK will bring to the notice of the Supreme Court that government-run transport corporations not only actively participated in the bandh but also prevented employees belonging to oppostion unions from carrying on with normal work.

The party would cite the hundreds of telegrams sent by employees owing allegiance to its trade union wing the Anna Thozhir Sangam (ATS) to the State Transport secretary besides managing directors of various State transport corporations that they were prevented from work. The demonstrations staged yesterday by members of ATS in front of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus depots, demanding that they be allowed to operate buses would be focussed.

They protests were held in several places including Pallavan House, Basin Bridge and Saidapet depots besides other towns in the State. Photographs taken during these protests would be put up as exhibits, it was told.

Besides this, the party would also submit media reports on the 'success of bandh' despite the Supreme Court orders to the contrary. Audio and video footages showing that normal life was affected in Tamilnadu will also be put up as exhibits. Various organs of the government also indirectly supported the bandh and this aspect would be also be brought forth in the petition, it was said.

The speeches made by Union Minister T R Baalu and several other State Ministers including Arcot N Veerasamy and MK Stalin on the role of the judiciary in yesterday's hunger strike are likely to be appended to the contempt petition.

The AIADMK will tell the court that these representatives of the people had nothing but contempt for the apex court when they spoke in connection with the Sethu project and the recent order of the Supreme Court in connection with the bandh.

Meanwhile, sources added that a separate petition will be filed demanding dismissal of the State government under Article 356 of the Constitution for 'wantonly diobeying' the orders of the highest court of the land. A direction would be sought to be given to the Union Home Ministry and the Central Cabinet to consider and impose the President's rule, it was said.
