Was it a bandh or hunger strike?

        Sir,

Whether it was a hunger strike or a bandh in Tamilnadu on 1 October, the fact remains that life in Tamilnadu came to a stand still. The Central govt offices were also hit because there was no public transport and all the autos irrespective of political allegiance stayed off the road fearing violence. So should we go along with Mrs Jayanthi Natrajan's –the Congress spokesperson who vehemently asserted in one of the TV channels, 'No, it is not a bandh' One is at a loss to understand for what this bandh/ hunger strike was for? Against who was it directed? The DMK shares power in the UPA government at the Centre. It is the Central government which had sought time till January to file its counter affidavit. Unless the stay imposed by the SC is vacated how can a bandh /hunger strike speed up the SSP? If the DMK is sincere in its objective then it should fault the Congress and the Centre. The Supreme Court has rightly pointed out that freedom of the people - be it of expression and right to movement cannot become subservient to the Freedom of expression of a few political leaders. Political leaders aired their views which were again contempt of the SC. One need not agree with the SC views but the disparaging remarks and aspersions were uncalled for. Dasmunshi went a step further by stating that the Congress goes all along with its ally the DMK and further assured the DMK that the Congress will do nothing to hurt the DMK-'we are committed… we will not disturb the State government remotely, directly, or explicitly'. This amounts to asserting that the Congress is a direct, explicit abettor to the contempt of SC. So no matter what the DMK does or does not the Congress will do nothing because of the dependency syndrome that the Congress suffers from. It needs crutches to stand . Dasmunshi should have at least restrained himself from saying that the DMK leader is following Gandhi's steps. What a shame. When it suits them they fall back on Gandhi for the wrong purpose.

Wise after events

        Sir,

This is with reference to your editorial on 'Striking Issues' in News Today dated 1 October. Nothing could be a grater relief and more refreshing for the conscious people of Tamilnadu than the that of the stay order passed by the Apex Court on the bandh call given by the DMK and its allies in connection with the expeditious implementation of Sethu Samudram Project.

It was the day of RAM VS RAVAN battle as it were when the vice was put paid to by virtue as the Apex court came down categorically on the proposed bandh call of the UPA.
