Dam: Kerala told to go by SC verdict

NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 3:

New Trade Union Initiative (NTUI) has said that the Kerala government should go by the verdict of the Supreme Court in the Mullaiperiyar Dam issue.

Speaking at a press conference here recently, president of NTUI V B Cherian said that not adhering to the judgement of the apex court would create an adverse implication.

'The Kerala government has not taken the right approach in solving the problem,' he added. Cherian was in Chennai to attend the first general council meeting held by the NTUI after its formation last year.

He said the points put forth by the Kerala government were not satisfactory and that it should resume talks. 'By raising the water level the Kerala government would lose an extra generation of electricity generated at Idukki while at the same time the water would have supplemented the Tamilnadu State for irrigation purpose.

Kerala government could have taken a more specific approach and levelled their talks by sharing gains, which both States could enjoy,' he said.
