Meet on urban growth

NT Bureau
Chennai, Feb 3:

A two-day global conference on Investing in Asia's Urban Future (5-6 Feb) would be organised by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at its headquarters in Manila, Philippines, in association with the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany.

The conference would discuss and recommend approaches to support sustainable urban development and address poverty in Asian cities. Moreover, the global meet would extend a platform for exchange among national and local governments, the private sector and civil society from urban areas in Asia, the ADB and the institutions in Germany.

It is proposed that at the conclusion of the meet, an MoU would be signed between Mayors of Asian cities, representatives of German government and the ADB to collaborate in the field of urban renewal and development projects. A joint initiative to improve the living conditions of the people in larger cities and urban areas through sustainable development would be kicked off. Towards this end, an Asian Cities Development Initiative (ACDI) would be formed to facilitate dialogue, training and advice to build the problem-solving capacity of decision makers from Asian cities and urban centres. This ACDI is intended to be the nucleus of an Asian cities network to be established in future.

The ADB conference is expected to be attended by about 150 high level officials from national and local governments, civil society, private sector, academia and global networks.
