Govt clarifies on 'observers' for polls

NT Bureau
Chennai, Feb 3:

The State government today said it had no powers to appoint observers for the Chennai Corporation bypolls.

In a reply to the notice by the Madras High Court, the State government said it was the duty of the State Election Commission to appoint independent observers and the State government cannot intervene in the issue.

The State government's clarification follows a petition filed by AIADMK seeking a stay on the Corporation bypolls to 100 wards a couple of days ago and the Madras High Court suggesting that the elections can be conducted in the supervision of former IAS officers.

The court sent a notice to the State government seeking their opinion, a couple of days ago.
