        A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed at the Madras High Court seeking to instruct the State Election Commission (SEC) to use Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for the Corporation bypolls on 18 February. The PIL would be taken up for hearing later in the day.

        The petitioner, former IAS officer Venkatasubramaniam, had contended that the recent civic polls in Mumbai were carried out with the help of EVMs. Hence the SEC should also go for EVMs for the Chennai Corporation bypolls.

        He further said the use of EVMs would prevent bogus voting and ensure free and fair elections. Considering the seriousness of the petition, Chief Justice Justice of Madras Court A P Shah said the case would be taken up for hearing today itself.
