Chennai, Feb 3:

'With an increased demographic profile, the country consists of a large educated work force which should be provided with opportunities for robust growth,' Anil Kakodkar, chairman, Department of Atomic Energy, has said.

Inaugurating student facilities at Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) at Siruseri near Chennai yesterday, Anil said the country should be a land of opportunities rather than ideas. CMI's initiatives like undergraduate indepth mathematical programmes for students were unique and more such activities like research programmes on pure mathematics were necessary as they could be used for varied applications like business, atomic, engineering and other fields.

Youth involved in high-level research in pure mathematics were of great importance and steps must be taken to create an environment which would attract more people to maths, he added.

Later, Anil said there was sharp focus on the ongoing research at the Kalpakkam nuclear complex to take the fuel utilisation to higher levels.

Earlier, director, Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation V Narayanan inaugurated the newly completed library block. CMI director C S Seshadri, chairman of Shriram Group companies R Thyagarajan and advisor to Union Ministry of HRD Sudeep Banerjee were also present on the occasion.
