HC judge calls for uniform tax system

        Madras High Court judge Chitra Venkataraman said rationalisation, simplification and consolidation of all taxes would result in uniformity of tax systems facilitating the balanced growth of economy.

        She was addressing a function organised yesterday by the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) on a discussion on VAT in southern States.

        Calling for the unification of all tax systems, the judge said there needs to be coordination between direct and indirect tax systems to check evasion.

        She also said there should be no hiccups or political compulsions for the effective administration of tax systems.

        After the implementation of VAT in the State, the manufacturing sector got benefitted while the trading community have not had that much, Chitra said.

        She further said the chamber had to go a long way in not only educating the trading community but also allaying fears over VAT.
