AIADMK to get more aggressive

NT Bureau
Chennai, Feb 4:

The executive and general council meetings of the main opposition AIADMK are slated to be held here tomorrow and are likely to take an aggressive stand against the government and launch agitations on a host of issues like the Palar check dam to 'draw the attention of the people and expose the intransigent stance of the DMK government,' sources said here today.

The meet would finalise action-plans to be more aggressive and take on the State government over the Palar check dam, Mullaiperiyar, and the 'deterioration' of law and order besides issues like the recent seizure of ball bearings and arrest of suspected LTTE cadres. Following the deliberations, hunger strikes, 'prison filling' programmes besides public meetings explaining the decisions of the council meet and a bunch of agitations are likely to be announced, sources added.

The Palar check dam issue is likely to be taken up in a big way by the AIADMK to corner the DMK. The meet would draw up plans to be implemented inside and outside the State Legislature and Parliament, it is said.

The meet would also focus on the party machinery and its performance. The district secretaries have been asked to sensitise the party apparatus at the local level to effectively project issues like the Palar and draw the people's attention over the 'failure' of the DMK government, party sources said.

The party districts are likely to be divided as six zones for effective control of the party. Observers are likely to be appointed to all the six zones to act as 'watchdogs' who would facilitate better coordination and field work of party functionaries. Efforts to strengthen the party organisation at various levels have already begun and new functionaries were appointed for various blocks and towns in the past couple of weeks.

These are part of the larger strategy to effectively counter the government at the local level. A review of the performance of the party functionaries would be made, it is learnt. One more significant agenda on cards tomorrow would be the appointment of presidium chairman. The names of O.Paneerselvam, Kanchi Manimozhian, Madusudhanan and Visalakshi Nedunchezian are doing the rounds for the post. The meet is also likely to bring resolutions condemning the State and Central governments over a host of issues.
