        Former Vice-Chancellor of University of Madras S P Thiagarajan today exhorted students to not only prepare well for the examinations but also develop soft skills to go far in life.

        He said this while distributing prizes to the toppers who had appeared for All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) 2007 Model Exam, organised by AIMS and Aarupadai Veedu Institute of Technology.

        'Because of globalisation, the access to higher education has been increased now, which would consequently open up lots of opportunities', the former Vice-Chancellor said, adding that at the same time, the students have to equip themselves to face new emerging challenges for becoming successful in achieving economic and livelihood benefits. Citing the National Knowledge Commission's report that the country needs 1,500 universities in the next few years to meet the growing demand, Thiagarajan felt the need to arrive at a policy- level decision advocating public, private participation for more fund allocation.

        Anna University's former director of entrance exams and admission P V Navaneethakrishnan spoke about how to get through the three levels of entrance exams to professional courses prescribed by the government of India and also the significance of AIEEE.

        Referring to the results of AIEEE 2006, AIMS education director Gita Prabhu said the State Board students were as competitive as CBSE students owing to the present syllabi of the State Board.

        She also said such model ambience and hands-on training would make the students know how board exams differ from the entrance examinations.

        Earlier, the toppers were felicitated and awarded cash prizes.

        Aarupadai Veedu Institute of Technology principal N R Alamelu and Vinayaka Missions University's general manager (operations) S Basker also spoke on the occasion.
