Chennai, Sept 5:
The 45th National 'A' Chess Championship scheduled to begin yesterday in the southern outskirts of Chennai has been called off. It will be held at a later date.
A group of players alleged that the accommodation available was below standard.
Though the accommodation was satisfactory, the Tamilnadu State Chess Association, in an effort to start the championship, offered to put them up in decent hotels at Kelambakkam and nearby places.
According to a press release from the Tamilnadu State Chess Association, this was negated by the handful of players who said that the hotels were also not upto their standards.
The Association then offered Rs 2.2 lakh to them to stay in hotels of their choice. This was also refused by the players who demanded Rs 5 lakh which was not acceptable to the Association.
The players then wanted to shift the championship venue to the heart of Chennai City, which the Association turned down.
As there was no agreement,
it was decided to postpone the championship to a later date.
