PMK against SEZs for software firms

NT Bureau
Chennai, Apr 7:

PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss today declared that IT companies acquiring 12,000 acres of land for SEZs (Special Economic Zones) was totally unacceptable to his party.

'IT companies are competing to set up SEZs. But all these software firms need not more than 25 acres for their business,' the PMK leader said in a press statement.

The demand for SEZs by IT firms would pave the way for backdoor entry of zamindari system which was eradicated 50 years ago. Modern-day zamindars should not be created in the name of SEZs, he warned.

SEZs should be setup as per the State government's Land Ceiling Act, he said, and demanded the government should come forward to fix ceiling for land acquisition for SEZs in Tamilnadu.

The State government should utilise the recent changes in the norms governing the formation of SEZs, including the reduction their size and other parameters.

Placement order for a family member in the proposed IT park, while acquiring the farm land, should be handed over at the time of registration of the sale-deed itself, Dr Ramadoss said.

Welcoming the decision of Empowered Group of Ministers (eGOM) to restrain the State governments from acquiring land for SEZs, Ramadoss, however, felt disappointed over fixation of a ceiling of 5,000 hectare of land for SEZ. 'With the decision to earmark just 50 per cent of land in SEZ for industries, the rest of the plot would be open for deals in real-estate market,' he lamented.
