Chennai, Apr 9:
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today announced in the Assembly that a senior IAS official would probe into the Chendur bomb blast case and assured government jobs to the family members of the 17 victims.
Replying to a special call attention motion brought by AIADMK, Congress, PMK, CPI and CPM, he said that all party leaders who spoke on the issue had called for an enquiry by a senior official instead of the DRO enquiry ordered by the government.
Chief Minister said that a committee would be formed comprising Villupuram District Collector and leaders of political parties to give recommendations on various means to help the families of the deceased. He announced that the government would adopt the families who lost their breadwinners.
Karunanidhi said the government would construct houses for those damaged in the blast and added that the District Collector had given first estimate report of damages worth Rs 28 lakh. After final estimates, the government would take steps to construct houses and disburse compensation to those affected by the blast.
This incident has taught many lessons, he said and added that government would take effective steps based on the suggestions given by the members on this issue.
Referring to Congress Whip Peter Alphonse's suggestion that the government should take over manufacturing and distribution of explosive materials, Karunanidhi said that the licence was not issued by the officials of district collectorate or State. Only the Central government has the powers to issue licence for explosive materials manufacturing and distribution.
Regarding the licensee, Sekar
(48) of Puducherry Malanipattu village, he said he had been distributing
explosive materials to quarries in Tindivanam and surrounding areas for
many areas and the explosives were supplied by Salem Sivasakthi Explosives

Deputy Leader of Opposition O Panneerselvam today levelled a charge in the State Assembly that the Chendur blast happened when the powerful RDX materials were being smuggled for extremist forces. This kind of situation had been prevailing for the past one year in the State. Taking strong exception to the police version, he said that even without forensic test of materials at the blast site, a senior police officer had said the explosions happened due to gelatine sticks. And the thick smoke that emanated from the blast site which clearly shows that it was not gelatine, he said. |
