Rape: Lifer for mill owner's son

        The Madras High Court today sentenced to life to the son of a Coimbatore mill owner in the case relating to rape and murder of a minor. A police inspector, who tried to cover up the case by destroying the evidences, was sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment.

        Delivering the judgement, Justice R Balasubramaniam and Arumuga Perumal Adhithan, said Rathinam, son of the mill owner, would have to undergo seven years imprisonment for rape, lifer for murder and three years imprisonment for trying to tamper the evidences simultaneously. The court also instructed to provide a solatium of Rs two lakh to the family of the girl, who was raped and murdered. Also, inspector Anbhazhagan was awarded two years rigorous imprisonment for trying to destroy the evidence. It may be recalled that a 16-year-old girl employed at a mill at Chinnavelampatti near Coimbatore was missing since 22 December, 1995. Her body was found in a well nearby.

        Postmortem revealed that she was raped and murdered.
