Chennai, Apr 9:
Reservation on the basis of religion in a secular State will sow seeds of separation, ultimately leading to balkanisation of Bharat, R S Narayanasami, State general secretary, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), has said.
In a statement, the VHP leader said it is very strange that in a constitutionally declared secular State, citizens are divided on the basis of religion for extending government benefits.
He quoted the statement of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi announcing reservation for Muslims and Christians in jobs and educational institutions in the Assembly recently.
He pointed out that an order by Andhra Pradesh government to given reservation for Muslims had been struck down by the Supreme Court.
He further said Karunanidhi has quoted Ambasankar Committee recommendations for giving reservation.
But the Committee report was never released to the public nor debated in the Assembly, he pointed out.
Narayanaswami said he himself had discussion with Ambasankar and he had told him that 'various sections in the society instead of aspiring to move forward as equals were claiming Backward status and reservation and willing to remain unequals.'
The VHP expresses its strong
protest to the proposed measure of the Tamilnadu government providing reservation
for Muslims and Christians, he said.
