        Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has presented cheques for Rs 6 lakh each to the legal heirs of Tamil scholars C Illakkuvanar and Pulavar Ghulam Khadir Navalar, at his residence yesterday.

        Neelakandeswari, wife of Illakuvanar and Ummu Kulusam, descendant of Pulavar Ghulam were presented cheques towards the purchase of copyrights of the works of the scholars by government.

        According to a press release, legal heirs of 17 Tamil scholars namely Parithimar Kalaignar, Pulavar Kulanthai, Ma Po Si were paid Rs 15 lakh, Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh respectively and for the rest Rs 6 lakh had been paid.

        Thus the total of Rs 1.29 crore had been paid to the legal heirs of Tamil scholars, added the release.
