SETTING A MODEL FOR OTHERS: A street at Annai Sathya Nagar is now
sparkling clean. Thanks to the joint efforts taken up by Chennai Wellingdon
Corporate Foundation and Rotary Club of Madras East.

A goal to transform a slum into a cleaner, greener environs has been achieved. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Chennai Wellingdon Corporate Foundation and Rotary Club of Madras East.

Sporting a new look is Annai Sathya Nagar at Jafferkhanpet, K K Nagar, where the residential area has been provided with all the basic amenities like concrete roads, drainage system, drinking water facility, modified garbage collection system and rainwater harvesting.

Indeed, a dream-come-true for the slum-dwellers who feel elated over the make-over of their surroundings. It took four years for the volunteers of the service organisations to set things right besides educating the slum-dwellers on healthy habits and protecting the environs.

Sukanya Venkatachalam, general manager, Chennai Wellingdon Corporate Foundation, said, 'it was an imperfect picture at the slum with overflowing sewage, garbage piled up in and around the area and slum-dwellers using the open place for answering nature's call. In toto, the area was unfit for living. We took the first step in launching our integrated development project and transformed the slum into a residential locality.'

Dr Jayam, a regular visitor to the slum for treating the slum- dwellers, said that the people have become health-conscious and begun to keep their surroundings clean.

Project Coordinator N Byravan said, 'we have spent about Rs 30 lakh for the project. And our four-year-work has borne fruit. We wouldn't have made it without the support of the locals and civic authorities.'

The expenditure per person was less than Rs 2 per day. No doubt this has become a model area for other slums to emulate.

Annai Sathya Nagar Welfare Association president Mani said that all the 550 families extended full cooperation to the organisations in making their dream project a reality.
