Top seed C Delphin of Stella Maris College was surprised by K Mrinalini of St Joseph's College in the first round of the silver jubilee edition of the Rachel Paranjothy Women's Chess Tournament at the Ethiraj College here.
M Mahalakshmi, bronze medalist in the recent World Under-8 event, was held to a draw by R Bharathi of Bakthavachalam High School.
The event was inaugurated by Thavamani, principal, Ethiraj College.
