Chennai, Jan 9:
AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa's announcement of the party's working committee and general council meetings on 30 January has once again confirmed media reports that the major opposition party of the State is heading for a rejuvenation.
Also, speculation is on over which one of the senior leaders of the party (either O Panneerselvam or P H Pandian) would be selected for the post of presidium chairman.
Nothing seems to be going right for the AIADMK in the last few months. Defeat in the Assembly elections has been followed by the one in the civic polls. And then it was the death of the party's presidium chairman K Kalimuthu.
All this called for some kind of rejuvenation in the party set up. And this is precisely what party supremo Jayalalithaa is attempting to do.
As a first step, Jayalalithaa has appointed new office bearers in the districts of North Chennai, South Chennai, Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Ramnathapuram, Tirunelveli suburban and Erode.
Now the former Chief Minister seems keen in working towards appointing a new presidium chairman, according to party sources.
They added that their leader wanted to appoint someone who is senior in age as well as experience to the presidium chairman's post.
The names doing the rounds include former Minister Panneerselvam and party senior P H Pandian.
The name of the former presidium chairman C Ponnaiyan, who was not in the limelight for the past one year and more, is also said to be in the reckoning.
However, one thing is sure
that everything would be out at the party's working committee and general
council meetings on 30 January in Chennai.
