Thanjavur, Jan 9:
Four persons, who murdered an aged couple six months ago and had been a challenge to the police, have been arrested, thanks to a tell-tale cell phone evidence.
According to police Venkatesan (75) was a retired teacher from panchayat primary school here, and his wife Sakunthala (72) also retired from the school. The couple had two sons and one daughter. One of the sons is in Delhi, the other in Orthanadu and the daughter at Australia.
The Venkatesans were staying in a house 'Germania Palace' on Reddipalayam Road and shifted to their own unit at Municipal Colony here. An electrical and electronic items shop keeper Krishnamurthy from Gorikulam befriended the aged couple when they were staying in the house at Reddipalyam Road.
The old lady wanted Krishnamurthy's help as they were alone what with their children staying elsewhere. krishnamurthy in turn directed them to Kasanadu Kovilur Siva temple to pray and seek the priest's help who was something of a soothsayer. Sakunthala also sought Krishnamurthy's help in going there on 17 June last.
But all through this Krishnamurthy was plotting against the couple with his accomplices Satheeshkumar, Manikandan and Saravanan. In a complicated plan, Krisnamurthy and his friends killed the aged couple.
The foursome then went to the couple's house and searched for valuables. As they could find nothing, they took away the cell phone that was on the table. They threw away the sim card into the river near big temple. They sold the jewels and the cell phone for Rs 20,000 and shared the money among themselves.
Meanwhile Sakunthala's corpse, floating on a canal at Panchanathikottai, was recovered by Taluk police and the body of Venkatesan, which was found in the Karukkadipatti canal was retrieved by Orathanadu police separately.
To solve the murders a special team was set up under Thanjavur taluk police inspector Tamizhselvan. The cell phone, with its IMEI number, is what came handy to catch the murderers.
