Sir,
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has opened the floodgates of awards and a lot of awards were given away at a colourful function in Chennai on 8 January. While the noble gesture on the Chief Minister's part should be lauded, one would like to know on the basis of which these awards are decided.
If you act in the role of Periyar and you get an award means Ben Kingsley should get the Gandhi award! Thol Thirumavalavan has won, rather nominated for the Ambedkar Award.
Ambedkar was a very great personality and one of the architects of Indian Constitution. If the government honours someone for just reciting his (Ambedkar's) name many times, there seem to be some ulterior motives.
S Venugopalan, Vananthurai.
