Local Administration Minister MK Stalin today gave away fogging and spraying machines worth 30 lakh to conservancy workers in a bid to control the increasing mosquito menace.
The Minister gave away a total of 315 machines including 200 spraying machines worth Rs seven lakh and 115 fogging machines worth Rs 23 lakh at a function in Ripon Buildings.
He said that to prevent the population explosion of mosquitoes, Compusia, a kind of fish which feeds on mosquito larvae, was let into the water bodies in and around the city.
'Moreover, to destroy the mosquito that breeds in stormwater canals and in other bigger water channels, the Corporation sprays biolarvicide,' he said.
Also, five fogging machines had been given to Exnora while training the workers involved in this initiative. This is in addition to measures taken up to control mosquitoes.
'Now a number of welfare associations had come forward to join hands with the Corporation to fight the increasing menace which is a welcome move,' he said.
Replying to a question on improving education standards of schools and turning the city into Singara Chennai, Stalin said, ' the earlier AIADMK government never showed any concern but now the Corporation would initiate appropriate measures to boost the quality of education and spruce up Chennai further.'
