to a student of New Prince MHSS, Adambakkam, during its Annual Day celebrations.

'Make sure that your children call you amma in Tamil, not 'mummy' in English, national poet Subramania Bharathi's granddaughter S Vijaya Bharathi has said.

She said this while addressing a gathering, mainly of parents, at the 19th Annual Day celebrations of New Prince Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Adambakkam, on Wednesday.

She said, 'Even though my family lives in Canada for more than a three decades now, my daughter, born and brought up in Canada, still calls me amma , though she speaks only in English the whole day'. Many parents here may argue that English is so important for their children for good future, but they should inculcate the importance of their mother language to their children before embracing an 'alien' language', Vijaya added.

Speaking on the occasion, State Information Commissioner G Ramakrishnan advised the children to be obedient to their teachers and parents, who are the guiding stars for their bright future.

While appreciating Indian tradition and social fabric, he expressed concern over the recent news of some software professionals being involved in activities related to cultural degradation, and held their parents responsible for it.

Besides others, professor P K Sundara Rajan, husband of Vijaya Bharathi, attended the function. Earlier, correspondent of the school K Loganathan welcomed the guests and parents. Principal V S Mahalakshmi presented an annual report of the school. The day's programme culminated with a spectacular cultural show by the students of the school.
