A R VEERARAGHAVAN
The death of six persons working in two textile mills here recently has exposed the lacunae in the safety measures taken up by the mills management.
As the Union Territory is celebrating National Safety Week now, the deaths have brought into focus negligence by the mills and government.
It is reported that four workers working in a private mill near Thiruvandarkoil died due to toxic gas emanating from the effluents while cleaning the tank. The deceased were identified as John Kennedy (32), Amirthgeer (23), Stalin (23) and Sivanantham (35).
Similarly, two persons - Murugesan and Raj working in a private mill near Keeravanjur died of toxic fumes.
With the workers now concerned
over safety measures, it is high time that the government and management
join together and take measures by way of frequent inspection by the officials
and strict action against the mills which fail to take precautionary measures
for workers engaged in draining out the effluents.
