State Health and Family Welfare Minister K K S R Ramachandran today announced that the maintenance work of the fourteen Government Medical Colleges, its hospital and students hostels would be taken up at a cost of Rs 33 crore.
Speaking to reporters after chairing a review meeting of the Deans of the Government Medical Colleges in the State, he said that he had instructed the Deans to ensure that the colleges, hospitals and the hostels were kept clean and tidy besides removing the garbage at regular intervals. However, he denied media reports of outbreak of meningitis in Tamilnadu.
Ramachandran said that the Deans were directed to fill up the vacancies in the non-medical staff categories by the month end and added that
Rs 4 crore has been allocated to dispose biowaste from the hospitals. The health department has also taken steps to replace 7,000 beds at a cost of Rs 6 crore, he added.
During the meeting, it was decided to construct new buildings at Stanley Medical College, Kilpauk Medical College, Madras Medical College and Chengleput Medical College.
Of the Rs 100 crore allocated
for construction of tower block , Rs 18 crore would be spent on constructing
new hostels at Stanley Medical College and hostels would be constructed
at Kilpauk Medical College and Chengleput Medical College at a cost of
Rs 25 crore each.
