Students with an edge in knowledge should help out those who are not as knowledgeable, Additional Director-General of Police (Administration) Letika Saran has said.
Speaking after distributing scholarships to college students at a function organised by Jaigopal Garodia Scholarships Centre at Anna Nagar here yesterday, Letika said that only through education could society be taken to great heights.
Recalling her school days, the police officer said that a bunch of talented students in her class shouldered the job of a teacher, who left the job midway. The students taught mathematics to classmates and helped them score high in the examination, she said.
Later, Letika distributed scholarships worth about Rs 12 lakh to 1,080 needy students from 124 colleges across the State. She complimented the welfare activities undertaken by the Jaigopal Garodia Vivekananda Trust since its inception in 2003.
Co-ordinator of the centre K S Kesavan dwelt on the importance of women education for the development of society. Educating a women would mean lighting up the lives of many, he said.
This year, scholarships were given to 922 economically backward girl students as also to about 220 physically disabled students.
He said the scholarship amount had been increased from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 12 lakh to help out an increased number of needy students to pursue their education.
The trust also conducts free coaching centres for professional courses entrance examinations. It had adopted eight government schools in various areas including Choolai, Manali, Madhavaram and Nanganallur in Chennai and had set up a book bank for students.
School principal G Vijayakumar
and its vice-principal Sukanya Bhaskaran were among the others who participated
in the function.
