HRD award to Tamil novelist

        Tamil novelist Hamsa Dhanagopal bagged the special award instituted by the Union HRD Ministry to honour writers for their literary works in languages other than their mother tongue for the year 2004-05.

        Called Baasha Bharathi Samman Award, the special honour was given away to Hamsa at a conference organised by the Central Council for Indian Languages in Mysore on 28 September.

        Though Marathi is her mother tongue, the Chennai-based novelist had written a Tamil book Nallathor Vennai Seithei that vividly portrayed the dire straits of womanhood in backward districts of Tamilnadu.

        The Baasha Bharathi award entailed a cash prize of Rs 25,000 along with a shawl and memento.
