Citizenship initiative reaps rich dividends

Coke on road to uplift community

Ameenpur (Hyderabad), Oct 9:

        Coca-Cola has outlined a roadmap towards water conservation and community development across the country by promoting citizenship initiatives through Coca-Cola Citizenship Challenge Awards.

        The awards were instituted to recognise the corporate social responsibility measures and promote locally relevant citizenship initiatives.

        The awardees were felicitated at a function held at Coca-Cola plant, located at Ameenpur near Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. The awards were presented by animal rights activist Amala Akkineni.

        Visakapatnam unit of Coca-Cola got the first prize for their contribution towards water conservation through construction of a check- dam with the help of NGO Smaran for the community at Nadergul village located at Saroor Nagar mandal.

        Siliguri unit of Coca-Cola got the second prize for helping conserve the environment through PET recycling. Paud (Pune) and Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) units won the third prize for their contribution to rainwater harvesting units and recharge of groundwater in various locations.

        CEO of Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd John Ustas said that at Coca-Cola, the belief was that growth leads to sustainable development only when it is inclusive and when the environment is preserved, protected and enriched.

        Regional vice-president (South) of Coca-Cola India Deepak Kaul said the company undertakes various activities for the benefit of the community across the country and that as a part of their corporate social responsibility strategy, sustainable water management remains their top priority. He said that to achieve the objective of water management and conservation the company follows the strategy of 4Rs which happen to be Reduce, Reuse, Recharge and Recycle. Over the last few years they have continuously engaged themselves with a large number of stakeholders and have incorporated their learnings in refining their overall strategy including the water sustainability strategy, he said.

        Deepak further said the focus would continue to be on projects which further improve the overall standard of living in communities where they operate.
