Monisha (20) from Mauritius was bed-ridden for a year but now she is all smiles after the successful Articular Surface Replacement (ASR) operation done in India.

Speaking to reporters here recently, Monisha said she was happy that her pain in the hip has reduced after four long years. She said she was eagerly looking forward to put her feet back on the floor and to get back to college.

Talking about the procedure, consultant orthopaedic surgeon of Apollo Hospitals Dr M Madan Mohan Reddy said, 'the simple and new surgical hip replacement procedure ASR was performed on this girl as she was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis'. 'It is an better option for youngsters as it is a long-lasting implant and less bone is removed with hip resurfacing than with a conventional total hip replacement'.

He also said,' this procedure includes reduced dislocation, restoration of 'normal anatomy' and preserves the patient's natural bone. Unlike the conventional hip replacement, this ASR makes the arthritic surface in the hip which is replaced with a highly polished, metal ball on the femoral (thighbone) side and a highly polished, metal cup on the acetabular (socket) side'. 'A small metal pin is inserted into the femur portion of the hip instead of a larger metal stem,' he added.

'The resurfaced femoral head being similar in size to the normal hip is mechanically more stable and the risks from hip dislocation are less than with a conventional total hip replacement' .

'Apart from this, the procedure offers increased range in motion to superior restoration of joint function. And the resurfacing procedure offers patients a durable and long lasting implant, which is well suited for higher demand activities and lifestyles. This procedure is suitable for patients of the younger age group,' Reddy added.
