Youth arrested for kidnapping minor girl

NT Bureau
Chennai, Feb 11:

A 19-year-old youth was held for kidnapping a minor girl and enticing her into marriage at Tirupathi.

Kavitha, 17, daughter of Pushpa residing at Padi Pudhu Nagar near Ambatur, was working in a textiles export company at Ambattur Estate. She never returned home after going to work on 4 January. Frantic search by her mother did not yield result and she lodged a complaint at the Ambattur Estate Police Station. Following this, a case was registered and an enquiry was conducted.

Meanwhile, a habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of Pushpa at the High Court was heard by the judge and the court ordered the police to produce Kavitha at the court on or before 12 February (tomorrow). Given a tight deadline, the police during their manhunt spotted the missing girl standing with a youth at the Ambattur OT bus shelter. Both of them were taken by the police for interrogation.

According to police, Nandakumar, 19, cajoled the minor girl to elope with him to Tirupathi where they got married. The couple stayed together at a lodge there for a few days. Later, they went to Erode and took up jobs at a banian company and rented a house for stay.

But as the couple ran short of money they returned to Ambattur. While the youth was arrested, the girl was sent to a remand home at Mylapore.
