The second phase of polio immunisation programme was today kick-started all over Tamilnadu for children below five years and the State has reached the targeted 71 lakh children.
In Chennai, there were 1,126 centres where polio immunisation was being undertaken. To eradicate the dreaded polio disease every year, the drops were being given in two phases.
During the first phase on 7 January, the polio drops were given all over the country for the benefit of children. The second phase that took off this morning achieved the targeted 71 lakh children all over the State.
The drops were given in primary health centres, nutritious noon meal centres, schools, hospitals and places where people gather in large numbers like bus stands, railway stations, temples and tourist spots. There were also mobile centres. The children were given the dose by over 5,000- odd workers in the field.
In Villupuram, Collector Brajendra Navneeth inaugurated the polio drive at the district headquarters hospital.
In the 2,374 camps set up, over 3.5 lakh children were administered the drops.
Deputy director (Medical) Dharmalingam, district revenue officer Chandrasekaran, municipal chairman Janakaraj and information and public relations officer Shanmughasundaram participated in the camp.
In Cuddalore, Collector Rajendra Rathnu inaugurated the camp. Meanwhile in Chidambaram, municipal chairman Baujiya Begum, vice-chairman Magaiarkarasi Ramanathan, Chidambaram RDO Gunasekarn, Tahsildhar Parasuraman, municipal commissioner Ramani, engineer Vasudevan and Councillors participated in the camp.
