Tyagaraja Aradhana in California

        The Tyagaraja Aradana and the songs by other composers were rendered at the Malibu temple, California, last week.

       The aradana, which was organized by Ganasaraswathy, popularly known as Ganam, who is a versatile musician and composer in her own rights, started at 10.00 a.m. and went on till 8.00 p.m.

        The speciality of this utsavam was not only the rendering of compositions by Saint Tyagaraja, but also those of other composers including Muthuswamy Dikshitar, Syama Sastri, Subbaraya Sastri, Subbaraya Dikshitar, Patnam Subramani Iyer, Harikesanallur Muthiya Bhagavathar, Papanasam Sivam, Ganam, Annamacharya, Gopalakrishna Bharati to name a few.

        Sri Gopi and Giridar, on behalf of the Malibu Temple Society, welcomed the gathering after the morning puja.

       After the rendering of Tyagaraja's 'Sri Ganapatini' in the raga saurastram set to adi tala, a group of teachers and students rendered the pancharatna kritis of Saint Tyagaraja with religious fervour.

        This was followed by solo performances (both vocal and instrumental) and vadya vrinda (en' group) by students of Ganam, Kalyani Sadanandam, Babu Parameswaran, Geetha Bennett, Rose, Murali-krishna, Vasantha Batchu, Shankari Senthilkumar. Suba Narayanan, Tiruvai-yaru Krishnan and Delhi Sunderrajan.

        Among the most memorable performances one must include an offering by Sangeetha, the multifaceted daughter of Ganam, who sang the 'Ramayana astapathi,' a ragamalika composition by her mother and guru Ganam, while Ganam herself rendered another own composition of hers, a 'divya nama kriti' in praise of Lord Venkateswara. Ramakrishna Ramamurty another talented artiste rendered the ever green 'Tiruvadi charanam' in kambhoji raga. The volunteer group, comprising Sangeetha Arun, Sangeetha, Sowmya, Subha and Krishna Sampath rendered Saint Tyagarajas kriti 'Sri Janaki' in the raga isa manohari set to Adi Talam very well. Notable singers at the utsavam, include Jayakrishna, Hari Asuri, Rose Muralikrishna, Vina Vasantha Batchu.

        A vote of thanks was proposed by Arun. At the end of the utsavam all the gurus were felicitated with a 'ponnadai' for their wonderful contribution to the world of music and for propagating carnatic music in LA by Shri Giridhar, board of directors, Malibu Temple.
