'Animal birth control must at villages'

NT Bureau
Chennai, Jan 12:

Animal birth control programme should be introduced in villages to reduce the excessive breeding of stray animals, Maneka Gandhi, animal rights activist and chairperson of People for Animals has said.

Inaugurating the fourth international 'Asia for Animals 2007' conference here recently, Maneka said animal welfare organisations should utilise various funds allotted to them and also learn the art of fund raising.

Maneka blamed the leather industry in the country for using the skins of cows and bulls for their products to earn money. This has led thousands of animals die in a cruel manner, she said. She also request the Animal Welfare Board of India to release more funds for various animal welfare activities to make the movement a successful one.

On the occasion, IAS officers Syed Munir Huda and Abul Hassan, journalist Oppili, IPS officer Sylendra Babu and animal rights activist Umaa Unnathi were felicitated for supporting the animal rights movement.
