Need to increase higher education ratio: Ponmudy

        Politicians and educationists should strive hard to increase the higher education ratio in India, State Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy has said.

        Speaking at the second convocation of the Tamilnadu Open University (TNOU) here yesterday, Ponmudy, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of TNOU said only eight percent of the youth in the country were getting access to higher education and it should be increased.

        The Minister also said politicians and educationists have the responsibility in taking the youth to the top with those in the global arena.

        At the convocation, poet Vairamuthu was conferred with honorary doctorate in Literature by the university.

        In his acceptance speech, Vairamuthu said education can reach at the grassroot level only through open universities. Coming down heavily on those working in abroad after getting education in India, Vairamuthu urged them to serve for the motherland.

        Speaking on the occasion, president and chief executive officer of Commonwealth of Learning John Daniel said cross-border higher education has become the order of the day as countries like India were offering competitive and comprehensive study and research programmes.

        He further said that the Tamil diaspora has spread all across the world due to knowledge and skills.

        In his address, TNOU Vice-Chancellor M S Palanichamy said the university is planning to conduct courses for skilled workers like painters and masons.

        Governor Surjit Singh Barnala presented the doctorate to Vairamuthu and degrees to students of the university.
