        A knowledge economy based on science and technology the is need of the hour and it can only be founded through discovery and innovation, Maharaj Kishan Bhan, Secretary to government, Department of Biotechnology, has said.

        Giving away the Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology (TANSA) awards for 2005-'06 organised by Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology here on Wednesday, he said, 'in today's India the economy is driven by a low-cost economic model of manufacturing and services. Though many would inform that one can prosper without being a frontier science State. A knowledge economy can be founded only through discovery and innovation, which is matched to our skills in services and manufacture.'

        Bhan also said that to build knowledge economy, one needs to involve and conglomerate the government, academia, industry and crafting an institutional structure, which is capable of capitalising on opportunities. 'To deliver the best results of science one is to find better ways of disseminating information,' he added.

        A total of 21 scientists received awards for the years 2005 and 2006 which carried a cash award of Rs 10,000 and a citation.

        The 2006 award in Medical Sciences was received by Thangam Menon, University of Madras for her work on microbiology. K Meena, Shrimathi Indira Gandhi College, Tiruchi, won the 2006 award for her research on mathematical techniques for problem-solving through artificial neural networks.

        K Vanangamudi, Dean, Agricultural University, received the award in the field of agricultural sciences.

        Ashok Jhunjunwala, Member, Scientific Advisory Committee to Prime Minister, K Ganesan, Secretary, Higher Education and Asit Baran Mandal, Director, CLRI, were also present on the occasion.
