AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Love in any language

Bulgarians says Obicham - Te, the Dutch say Ik hou van jou, the Germans says Ich liebe Dich, the Japanese say Watashi Wa Anata Ga Suki Desu, while the North Indians Mein Tumse Pyar Karta Hoom, the South Indian says Naan Unnai Kaadhal Ikren.

It is however said, whatever the language or fashion, love takes on various facades - sometimes discreet, sometimes plainly obvious, sometimes gentle, and sometimes abrasive. All over the world, the message remains the same. Love is the manifestation of an emotion related to a sense of strong affection or profound oneness.

Flowers are a favourite Valentine gift among Indians. These beautiful bunches
of colourful flowers signify the beautiful relationships that people share.

Today is Valentine's Day. A day to express ones affection to another. Though the day has become a lot more commercial, what with restaurants getting ready for a multitude of diners, card shops displaying the mushiest in their range, and florists run helter skelter to sell more roses, there is no stopping us from going deep into what love is all about.

Depending on context, love can have a wide variety of intended meanings. Romantic love is seen as a deep, ineffable feeling of intense and tender attraction shared in a passionate or intimate attraction and deep interpersonal relationships. Mostly between a male and a female, romantic love could lead to a more serious partnership if there is commitment on both sides.

Love can also be conceived as platonic love. This could happen in between close friends. 'My parents could not accept and understand my relationship with my former classmate Rahul. They could not fathom that a boy and a girl can be friends without any romantic involvement in between them,' says Praveena, a student of Stella Maris College. Rahul and Praveena's relationship is purely platonic. They like each other just the way they are. They talk about anything the sun, including the girls to whom Rahul has an eye for and the boys that make Praveena giggle.

Religious love is a sublime submission to the Gods above. This is when a person dedicates himself or herself in the service of the religion, oftentimes willing to denounce all worldly pleasures in favour of a life of simplicity.

The love for ones family is referred to as filial love. Forty-five-year old Kumar has decided not to give any thought about marriage because of his responsibility towards his parents and two aunties at home. The love for his family so strong binds Kumar that he is willing to sacrifice all the happiness and security tha he can get from a home of his own.

This diverse range of meanings in the singular word love is often contrasted with the plurality of Greek words for love - eros, phillia, storge, reflecting the concept's depth, versatility, and complexity.

But the fact remains that the concept of love is the same all over, no matter the difference in country, race or religion. As described in detail in the most popular book in the world - Love is patient and kind. Is never envious or vaunted up with pride. Nor is she conceited and never is she rude. Never does she think of self or ever get annoyed. She never is resentful, is never glad with sin but always glad to side with truth.
