The State government has filled nearly 20,000 teacher posts in primary schools in the last nine months and about 2,000 college teachers were recruited during last one year, Minister for Higher Education K Ponmudy has said.
Delivering the convocation address at the Lady Willingdon Institute of Advanced Study in Education here yesterday, Ponmudy said as vacancies in schools and colleges would affect the future generation, the government had lifted the ban on recruitment of teachers. These vacancies were filled by the government on the basis of seniority in employment exchange, he said.
The Minister urged the teachers to update their knowledge keeping pace with the changing situation as they had a greater responsibility of moulding the future generation.
He further informed that the State Council of Higher Education is working towards reforming the education system. 'With need for more teachers, the government could increase the intake of M.Ed students in the institute from 25 students to 50', he said.
Later, 205 students received
their B Ed degrees and 25 got M Ed degrees which includes six visually-challenged
