Balancing writing and film-making

Balancing two jobs is never easy, even in the best of times. However, Rajashree, a Mumbai-based author, is confident of doing so. Her debut novel - Trust Me is said to be a bestseller and she hopes to be a writer and a film-maker at the same time.

News Today caught up with Rajashree when she was in Chennai recently. Basking in the success of her maiden venture, she was undoubtedly delighted. About the novel receiving good reviews, the writer-director (she has directed a film) says it is wonderful.

'It (the novel) is Indian chick lit told using 'a Hindi film style' narrative structure,' said Rajashree. 'So, I have not given depth to the characters and has deliberately used cliches,' she added. She chose this narrative style influenced by her stint with MTV working on its show Filmi Fundas.

Having worked in the Hindi film industry (with no less a person that Sanjay Leela Bhansali), she knows Bollywood rather well and it is evident in the storyline of the novel.

Rajashree, a Hindi film buff since she was a child said she once stood in a line for five hours to get tickets for Sholay. She has been working in Mumbai after studying direction at the Film and Television Institute of India, Poona. A film she wrote and directed The Rebel won a National Award and was screened at many film festivals.

For now, Rajashree is happy to savour the success of her maiden novel before embarking on directing another film.
