Chennai, May 15:
Chennai teenager Ashwin Sundar, who is one of India's finest prospects in two-wheeler racing, finished fifth overall in the first round of the UAM Asian National Racing Championship, held Sunday at the Tsukuba Circuit in Japan.
In the qualifying races Ashwin had the fastest lap timing of 01:14:9 which put him in the 8th place in the grid of 18 racers, according to a press release here.
In race one, Ashwin finished in eighth place finishing eight seconds behind the winner while in second race there was a stiff fight between the riders in 2nd to 9th places on the grid.
Ashwin Sundar starting in 8th place did well to finish in 7th place in a race which saw these eight racers involved in a close tussle and taking the chequered flag in fractions of a second.
The first round saw racers from Thailand finishing in first place followed by Indonesia, China, Japan and India.
Modelled on the lines of
the A 1 GP the races saw the current national champions of the participating
nations in action. Racers from India, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines
and China were among those competing in this event featuring 150 cc 4 stroke
bikes.
