        A checking inspector was hit with an empty beer bottle by a 25-year-old, who was caught travelling without a ticket on board an MTC bus near Chennai Central yesterday.

        According to police, checking inspector Sankaranarayanan and three officials had entered a 7G bus at Chennai Central bus stop. When one youth tried to alight the bus unnoticed, Sankaranarayanan had stopped him and asked him to produce his ticket.

        The youth in the guise of taking out his ticket took out a beer bottle, hit the inspector on the head and fled from the scene.

        The official was admitted to the nearby government hospital and given treatment.

        Police have registered a case.
