'Exnora Gem' goes to NGO representative

        Ponn Kalaimani, assistant general secretary of Exnora International, has been presented the 'Exnora Gem' Award for completing three decades of social service. The award was presented by M Subramanian, Mayor of Chennai Corporation, in a function held in Chennai recently.

        Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said the service rendered by Ponn Kalaimani was praiseworthy, particularly during the tsunami and notably the campaign against breaking pumpkins on roads.

        These apart, the services include organising an accident-free Diwali along with Fire Department and streamlining of water supply by Metrowater ensuring equitable water.

        In addition, the service rendered comprise elimination of middle men and corruption in water distribution in association with Metrowater, creating awareness on rainwater harvesting along with Metrowater and Sri Krishna Sweets; founding of 'Exnora Community Guard' to protect people during festival occasions.

        Kandavel, vice-chairman of Pammal Municipality, speaking on the occasion, lauded the efforts by Exnora representatives in making useful products out of waste.

        Sulochana Ramaseshan, president, Exnora International, said Hotel Raintree would receive 'Green Hotel' award very shortly.

        Ponn Kalaimani was felicitated by various other speakers on the occasion.

        The 'Exnora Gem Award' was instituted this year in order to felicitate those who have been into social work for a long time.
