DRIVING IN THE DARK: Motorists finding it difficult to use the subway near the Sports
Development Authority of Tamilnadu in Chetpet, which does not have proper lighting.

The vehicular subway near the Sports Development Authority of Tamilnadu (SDAT) in Chetpet is engulfed in darkness without adequate lighting facilities, making the going tough for motorists.

This road, which is widely used, has daunted many two-wheeler riders at times. Motorists who frequent this stretch find it very difficult to navigate under the subway.

The lack of sufficient lighting has caused many major accidents and unwanted scuffles between two-wheeler riders. Moreover the subway is being used as an open toilet and a haven for beggars at night.

A regular commuter Preetha says, 'the road is already narrow and adding to our woes they have not put up proper lighting in the subway. The two-wheeler riders navigate this stretch with utmost difficulty. I have seen some people getting down from their bikes and walking the stretch to avoid getting knocked down.'

Sugumaran, a senior citizen, laments, 'I take this route everyday in my cycle to reach home. At least scooters can be spotted because of their head lights. Cyclists are the ones who fall easy prey to speeding vehicles.'

Another Shiva, a motorist says, 'the glare from the vehicles coming from the opposite direction is increased because there is no other light in the subway. Everyday, I witness so many fights between motorists because of some minor accident, he adds.

The pedestrian walk is also very narrow. 'Once I accidently stepped on a stray dog, lying on the path way. It bit me and I had to rush to the hospital for treatment,' says one Punniyakoti. And if it is not dogs there are pot holes waiting to greet the unwary pedestrian, he adds.

Installation of proper lighting will prevent many fatal accidents on this stretch, many felt.
