STATIONED TO SCRAP: Condemned tempo van on Sixth Cross Street in Azhagiri Nagar at Vadapalani. |
Streets turning into parking lots is nothing new. But a condemned vehicle stationed at a residential area for the past few years is a cause for concern for those in the neighbourhood.
The scene is Azhagiri Nagar Sixth Cross Street at tail-end Vadapalani. Ironically, the cargo van belongs to an owner-cum-driver residing in this locality. According to local people, the vehicle has been left abandoned which is a hindrance and bother.
Moreover, it serves as a haven for nefarious activities during late nights. Vijayan, a resident, said that the vehicle has been left high and dry by none other than a person living in this area, who shows scant regard to keep the locality clean and tidy.
Since the vehicle is parked near the compound wall of a dwelling, the passers-by use the small gap in-between for passing urine. Added to this, it turns as an ideal spot for dumping garbage and waste materials.
The Onyx people find it extremely difficult to remove the garbage as the condemned van is an obstacle to their routine work. 'What is the use in parking an unused vehicle causing much hardships to the neighbours?,' asks a long time resident Prabhakar.
According to home-maker Shefa, the entire stretch except for where the abandoned vehicle is parked is clean and neat. The stench emanating from the area that got converted into a public urinal is nauseating.
Repeated pleas to the negligent
owner of the vehicle has fallen on deaf ears. Like a last straw on a camel's
back, the residents now seek the help of either Corporation authorities
or Chennai City Traffic Police (CCTP).
