Local Administration Minister M K Stalin has assured that the Chennai Corporation's project to build a Storm Water Drain (SWD) network in Velacheri at a cost of Rs 6 crore would be completed by the end of July.
After reviewing the status of the project in Velacheri yesterday, Stalin said that the network would mitigate flooding in Velacheri, which is prone to severe water logging during the monsoon.
During the rains last November, the Public Works Department (PWD) had formed a temporary watercourse to carry the water into the marsh.
The Minister instructed the PWD officials to construct a permanent link canal to drain the runoff.
The SWD network will benefit the residents of colonies in West Velacheri including AG's Colony, Sriram Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Radha Nagar, Raja Sethupuram and Tamilnadu Housing Board Colony. In East Velacheri, LIC Colony, Velacheri Bypass Road, Taramani 100 Feet road, CSIR Colony and Taramani Pillayar Koil Street would be covered.
The Minister further informed that Chennai Corporation has started the work to provide 39 SWD. Also plans are there to construct 83 such networks at a cost of Rs 12.97 crore (27.35 km stretch) in 10 zones of Chennai City and 46 networks (112.10 km stretch) at a cost of Rs 11.57 crore.
