        A 40-year-old woman, who set herself ablaze at her house in Kanchipuram and her husband who tried to save her, sustained severe burn injuries and are said to be in a critical condition. According to police, Lakshmi, a resident of Selai Ramaswami Street in Big Kanchipuram, is said to have taken the extreme step after an altercation with her husband Kesavan (45) over the purchase of a mobile phone yesterday.

        Kesavan, in a bid to save his wife, who set herself afire, sustained burn injuries. The couple, who were admitted in the Kanchipuram government hospital are said to be in critical condition.

        A TASMAC retail outlet at Gandhi Nagar, near Ponneri, was burgled and the police are on a hunt for the culprits.

        According to police sources, Rs.1,00,000 in cash and Rs.50,000 worth liqour bottles were burgled from the TASMAC shop in Gandhi Nagar at Tiruvallur High Road, near Ponneri yesterday. When employees Karthikeyan and Ramesh came to the shop this morning they were shocked to find it looted.
