'Endo-vascular grafting is one of the latest techniques in the treatment of aortic aneurysms, a serious condition affecting the aorta, which if untreated can burst killing the victim almost instantly,' said Dr K Murali, interventional radiologist, here recently.
He said this while addressing the media after a live workshop on 'Endovascular grafting in Aortic Aneurysm' at MIOT Hospitals.
Dr Murali said that usually such conditions are treated by open operation in which the patient would need blood transfusion and has to stay in the hospital for 10-15 days, which would not be the case under this technique. For, according to him, the patient can be discharged within three days after the operation.
In this technique,a graft is introduced through a small artery in the groin and placed in the area of aneurysm.
The operation can done by administering local anaesthesia.
Dr T N Vasudevan, a New Zealand- based senior consultant surgeon, said the availability of stent grafts and the ease of placement have made this technique immensely popular among many surgeons in the world.
The medical practitioner further said the various symptoms of this medical condition were back and chest pain, change in tone among others.
He also drove home the point
that people having high blood pressure are more susceptible to this condition.
