Founder and Chancellor of VIT University G Viswanathan today called for a rethink on the 'affiliation model' as it increases dependency on a particular institution for educational patterns and reduces independent thinking of students.

He said this while delivering the Graduation Day address at Velammal Engineering College and Velammal College of Management and Computer Studies held on its premises at Surapet here yesterday.

He said, 'India is growing fast in various arenas worldwide and you (students) have a big role to play to mark the presence of Indian intellectuals across the globe'.

Summarising the pace of development in India in the last quarter, Viswanathan quoted a recent survey which says by the year 2040, India would be a third largest economy behind China and United States of America.

Expressing concern over the least availability of medical seats in Tamilnadu, Viswanathan said many students from Tamilnadu visit East European countries to pursue their studies, as the cost of education is less there when compared to India.

Speaking on the occasion, vice- president of Tata Consultancy Services K Jayaramakrishnan said, 'Many analysts have drawn a bleak future for IT companies in the coming years. But I have a different version. IT will survive, because, it is not a stand-alone company. But IT companies are the one, which coordinates and enables the smooth functioning of other companies'.

Later, Viswanathan conferred degrees and handed over cash prizes to the students who had brought laurels to the college by securing university ranks.

Around 594 students were handed over with degree certificates. Chairman of Velammal Educational Trust M V Muthuramalingam, CEO M V M Velmurugan, principal of Velammal Engineering College G B Jaiprakash Narain, and director of Velammal College of Management and Computer Studies S V Devanathan were present at the function.
