MCC students find more questions to answer
NT Bureau
Chennai, Dec 19:
Following the report in News Today about a lecherous lecturer in the visual communication department of Madras Christian College, there have been many questions raised in that famed educational institution.
Ironically, those who have been called to answer them are the students, and not the man in the centre of the controversy.
Though the lecturer, who is reeling under the avalanche of sexual allegations, has offered to quit, the college management is not ready to take his quit offer.
On the other hand, the college has set up an inquiry panel, which seems more interested in finding out how the news made it to the media. Students have been questioned for hours together as to the source of the leak.
Chandra (name changed), a student said, 'the panel, which comprises the dean of women's affair and Martin hall (women's hostel) warden, questioned us. Without students' (girls) encouragement how could he (the lecturer) flirt? Flirtation was up to what level?' Questions of such tone and tenor have made the girl students feel upset. 'Instead of initiating a proper inquiry against the lecturer, they have asked him not to resign the job'.
After News Today's report on 12 December, the particular lecturer was reportedly ready to resign his job by 14 December. But the college hasn't accepted the resignation letter. Students say that it is the college authorities who are backing him.
'Around four girl students who looked to be friendly with this lecturer are not coming to college, as they were inquired for more than one hour in closed rooms',' another student said.
Not just this issue, there are many other matters left unheard by the management. One such is that of 'flashers' (collegespeak for nudists or those with a tendency towards exhibitionism). The son of a professor is said to have behaved pretty oddly with a girl. But no action has been taken either against him or against three or four 'flashers' in the campus.
Instead the rules of the ladies hostel have been strengthened up. The girls in hostels are asked to come back by 6 p.m. The point is the evening college gets over only by 6.15 pm. Perhaps the students need a time machine, says a hostel student.
When News Today tried
to contact the Principal, V J Philip, in this regard he was not available.
However, a source close to the principal said,'the matter has been taken
very seriously and an enquiry is on. We will take severe action based on
the inquiry panel's finding'.
